Who We Are

Registered midwives are health professionals who provide expert primary care for low-risk clients and their babies throughout pregnancy, birth, and the first six weeks postpartum.

Our Association

The Association of Nova Scotia Midwives (ANSM) is the provincial organization representing registered midwives and the profession of midwifery in Nova Scotia.

We believe

Midwifery is fundamental to primary health care and high quality perinatal and newborn services. Our vision and goal is to make equitable midwifery care available and accessible to all families in Nova Scotia.

About the ANSM

The Association of Nova Scotia Midwives (ANSM) is the provincial organization representing registered midwives and the profession of midwifery in Nova Scotia. Our purpose and mission is to provide leadership, support, and advocacy for midwifery as a vital part of the primary health care system.

About Midwifery

Registered midwives are primary care providers and experts in the provision of care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the first six weeks postpartum for parents and infants in addition to the provision of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care which includes contraceptive counseling and prescribing, abortion care, vaccinations, cervical cancer and STI screening, and infant feeding support. Midwives attend births in hospital and out of hospitals, in birth centres and at home.
